Hello, I’m David and I am the Chairman of the local business owners’ group BNI Business Class, am a member and former Board Member of Richmond Chamber of Commerce, and member of, and contributor to, both St Margarets Traders Association and Twickenham Town Business Association. We are also a happy member of the Federation of Small Businesses.

I was also getting involved with and helping community events from 2003 onwards – 3 years before I had a local business to possibly benefit from it in any kind of ‘PR’ fashion. I live right here myself, ten minutes walk from the office and have always personally been heavily involved with the community I love, much of the time using my being a musician and ex-music manager and record company person to help events. e.g. in 2003 I co-produced, marketed and hosted, with Ben Makins, the Radnor Gardens Music Day which was the biggest such event in recent years, attracting 9,000 people to the park.

Here are all the local events I have either hosted or sponsored in some way, plus some other contributions:

2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 - TWICKENHAM GREEN FESTIVAL FUN DAY

I book the bands, the stage and the PA system, write ad copy, put posters up, then stage-manage and host the event onstage. I also played a few times in the bands.

I also pay for an ad every year in the programme.

2010 - weekly TWICKENHAM SUNDAY JAM

I started a musicians’ Sunday jam session at the Hob Goblin pub in Twickenham in May 2006 and ran and hosted it with my friend Ray for 4 years every single Sunday evening. it still runs, very successfully. This has encouraged many musicians in the area, young and old and many hot up and coming young players got their first chance in front of an audience through us. I even have friends now who have settled in the area after being introduced to the town through this weekly event! At least half a dozen bands have been formed from this ‘scene’ and they all play locally at other venues in the town. The event has benefited the town and brought up to 80 people into the centre of the town, spending money, every single Sunday for five years, through all seasons, rain or shine, a day which on many occasions would otherwise have been a very quiet day in the town.

2007 - THE MAYOR OF RICHMOND CONCERTS

The Mayor Marc Cranfield-Adams put on three open-air concerts at the rear of York House and kindly asked me to compere them which I did, and I also ran an auction for prizes etc on the last night.

CHURCH STREET WINTER FASHION SHOW

I brought down my own PA system and set it up and hosted this event.

2008 - CHURCH STREET SUMMER FASHION SHOW

Made up music CDs to suit the show, brought my own PA system and hosted the event , which as above, was to promote the shops in the street that sold clothing

‘MISS TWICKENHAM’ pageant, CHURCH STREET

Hosted this fun / ironic event on stage, which was part of the August Bank Holiday fair.

CHAMBER OF COMMERCE PARTY

Created the ‘Chamber Chillout’- the Chamber’s successful summer party by the river in Richmond. I came up with the name and concept, designed the invitations and again played for free while paying my fellow musicians myself.

Also designed a new promo postcard for the Chamber and paid my artwork guy to make it ready for print.

CHARITY EVENT ON BEHALF OF SOUTH AFRICAN CHARITY

Peter Desmond, whom I met through the Chamber of Commerce, is trustee of a charity his daughter works at in South Africa, The African Pulse, which helps people suffering from HIV. He wanted to have a charity concert for it and joked about getting the ‘Bhundu Boys’, a famous African 80s band to play at it.

I booked the venue, designed the marketing, and hosted and promoted the event. It was packed out and a huge success – and through my contacts the main act was the only surviving Bhundu Boy! With his band. This was all done for no fee of course and the charity benefited by £1800 as well as a raised profile to local people.

2009 - ST MARGARETS FAIR

I always take an ad in the programme. I have played there in my band every year for four years. I play for free every time and pay the fee received, to the other 2 players.

CHURCH STREET FAIR

Played with my band, again playing for free and giving the money paid to the others.

2010 - same events as 2009 again plus:

Played at and sponsored ST MARGARETS CROWN ROAD SUMMER FAIR and WINTER FAIR

I paid the others from my own pocket as usual and played for free myself.

2011 - same events as 2010 again plus:

TWICKENHAM GREEN FUN DAY

Big new sponsor in Laverstoke Farm so I spent a day of my own weekday time on the farm finding out as much as I could about them so that, when hosting the event, I could promote them as best I could and hopefully make it worth their while so that they would obtain value from it this time - and sponsor the event again. I interviewed the Farm owner, former Formula 1 World Champion racing driver Jody Scheckter on stage.

CHURCH STREET AUGUST BANK HOLIDAY FAIR

Was a Main Event Sponsor (even though I’m not in Church Street! I love the street anyway) I played for free, paid my band, provided my own PA equipment, and booked and organised the other 3 bands.

RADNOR GARDENS – MAYOR’S FUN DAY

The Mayor, Clare Head, asked me to bring my band to play at her event in the Park and I gladly agreed, being a Main Event Sponsor, playing for free myself again as usual.

2012 - TWICKENHAM GREEN FAMILY FUN DAY as usual

TWICKENHAM ALIVE – RIVERSIDE EVENTS, 2 SATURDAYS IN JUNE

These were two new big outdoor events at the Riverside opposite Eel Pie Island. As well as hosting the music stages and booking the ten local bands for both Saturdays, I paid a significant sum into the event and was listed as one of only 3 event sponsors alongside the Rugby Football Union and the big local solicitors, Stone Rowe Brewer.

RADNOR GARDENS FAMILY FUN DAY, SEPTEMBER

We have kindly been asked to play again and once more I will take no fee whilst paying the other musicians to provide music at this charitable event.

BUSINESS ACTIVITY

I was an active member of St Margarets Traders Association but decided to leave in 2011.

I am a former Chairman of a branch of BNI – 30 local business people in a supportive network. I was a member for 3 years, breakfasting there every single week and supporting new ventures in the borough.

I am a member of the Best of Richmond, which promotes local businesses.
